It crossed my mind a while ago, that while the "Fan" mechanics of this site may have something cool about them, there is a need for a more solid and straightforward buddy system that will enable users to have their Wooshii contacts organized, share whatever new content they might have etc. I was thinking of something close to Vimeo's contacts system.

I think it's not a bad idea at all. Being a fan doesn't really do that much except giving someone a good feeling. A more dedicated contact system would maybe even spark more interest on both sides. I would prefer a system in which you could still have fans or contacts, but that there's also the option of "real" contacts, so there's a little more selection in who you are contact with. Or am i getting too facebook here?

I don't think you're getting too Facebook. I wasn't thinking of a contacts system that extreme. On the contrary, I was thinking of a very straightforward and useful tool that would enable wooshii users to interact better. This tool would include a simple buddy + PM systems to keep track and easy contact with those you're interested in. The Fan system could be converted to a sort of ranking / rating or it could be kept as it is right now. It's cool enough for self esteem boosting purposes but that's all.

I agree, this sounds like it would be a great asset to each person. That way you could choose to follow that particular person's videos and posts. I think it is a great idea.

So the key feature then is the ability to contact someone directly and ideally privately if needs be?

I really like this idea. Perhaps, make it more like a friends list off of other sites such as facebook or myspace? right now its a little like twitter.

And keeping an accurate and handy list of your contacts (with expandable details, link to their wooshii profile etc.). And also a share button attached to virals, videos, animations, to notify selected contacts when posting new content.
