As we know, Wooshii is looking to expand to offer pop promos/music videos - this is a great thing, and I hope budgets and so creative freedoms will be a lot higher! So, which pop promos have worked well for you? What makes a good pop promo?
I love the Ministry of Sound promos, they're usually bright, cheeky, sexy, fun and funny. They often have a narrative arc, are excellently lit, wonderful choreography, attractive dancers, funky attitude, everything a good promo needs... They do a great job of holding your attention whilst the catchy tunes hook into your brain. My absolute favourite has to be the promo for the re-release of Utah Saints' Something Good in 2008 which has all of these elements.
But what have I missed? What makes a good pop promo for you?
There are many I like, but one of my favourite ones Weapon of Choice by Fat Boy Slim, directed by Spike Jonze and starring none other than Mr. Christopher Walken. A true classic! Above all, it's a really fun music video.
wow, this would be great, i have done music videos before and would love the chance to work on them again
(see my video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpd9eXTHfB4)
i feel it is very important to fit the images transitions etc in with the lyrics and beat, also a bit of humor like the fatboy video above always works great, if not funny then a strong story that relates to the songs lyrics should be employed, im tired of seeing music videos that are basically the band pretending to perform on stage or in a room etc, we need some more creativity
prodigy - smack my bitch up
and
slipknot - vermillion
are great examples of story based videos in my opinion
I've remembered another favourite - rather more abstract and certainly not cheap, but it maps the music to the visuals very tastefully - It's Gondry, of course, with Chemical Brothers 'Star Guitar'

It's a superb promo (which won't let me embed this decent quality version), every element syncs, even every person standing at the station syncs with a lyric. Enjoy it!
Almost forgot about this video that I find superb in terms of filmaking, R.E.M. - Imitation of Life - just one take and back and forth between different areas of the screen and forward and backward motion. Awesome stuff:
The Gorillaz just release a new awesome music video for their new album, so it would be a time to remember the also awesome one who started it all: Clint Eastwood
