Nobody can deny the persuasiveness that mobile phones have been having in the last few years, from apps to video to doing everything with them.
And that includes seeing online video on them.
With 6 billion mobile phones worlwide in the end of 2011, of which a few hundred million are smartphones (324 million sold in three quarters of 2011 alone), mobile online video is one of the categories with more growth.
Nielsen’s State of the Media: The Mobile Media Report Q3 2011 states that:
- The majority of 25-34 and 18-24 year olds now own smartphones (64% and 53% respectively);
- The number of smartphone subscribers using the mobile Internet has grown 45 percent since 2010;
- There were 31 million views watched on this quarter alone.
This graph on the report clearly shows the growth:
Moreover, on their constantly updated Statistics page for the press, Youtube states that it serves more than 400 Million mobile video views per day. Per day!
This video from Google, although a bit dated (from April of last year) shows an overall perspective of mobile marketing, and that while video is still not the most dominant activity on mobile, in one year it jumped from 20% to almost 50%. Take a look:
So with all this in mind, you can see that mobile video is becoming a huge opportunity for brands to reach more and more consumers, in a device that is now part of their life.
